Frequently Asked Questions
What is Asphalt Paving?
Asphalt paving, sometimes called "blacktopping" is the process of installing a hot mixture of tar and stone on an area and rolling it out to make a relatively flat, smooth surface.
Why should I consider asphalt paving or "blacktopping'?
There are several reasons to consider paving a driveway or parking area. Consider this:
The "Stone Cycle"
A typical stone driveway is composed of a base of soil topped with some type of stone. Over the years a stone driveway needs to have new stone installed as the old stone is either compacted in or (more often) pushed off or snow-plowed away. As the stone is pushed away, clogging ditches or littering lawns, the soft spots in the driveway soil begin to give away, forming "potholes". As the potholes get bigger, the homeowner needs to have the driveway graded and re-stoned. The cycle is repeated.
Ease of Maintenance
A paved driveway's only maintenance is an application of a coal tar-based sealant that can be applied either professionally or by the homeowner. Typically this sealant is applied about one year after the new pavement is installed and then about every two years after that.
Affordable Beauty
Aesthetically, a paved driveway offers a smooth, clear entrance to your home. The "curb appeal" of your home is much greater if the driveway is paved than if it is left stoned. Your home is probably your greatest asset. This asset can easily be enhanced with a paved driveway.
Better Value When Your House is Sold
A paved driveway offers a better return to you on your investment and better value for the buyer who appreciates a "turnkey" property.
Smooth Driving, Bicycling, or Strolling Surface
It's much easier to ride bikes (or learn to ride a bike!), or push a stroller, or drive on a paved driveway.
Basketball Hoop, Game Area
Many of our customers desire a paved driveway so that they can have a basketball goal installed (a service we offer) or a game area designated for the kids. It's much easier to watch the little ones in your own backyard.
When Can I get My Driveway Paved?
The "paving season", in the Northeast U.S., runs usually from March through the beginning of December.
How Much Does it Cost?
Paving a driveway is surprisingly affordable. Considering the ease and affordability of maintenance, compared to a stone driveway, the installation and upkeep of a paved driveway is quite cost-effective. We will be happy to quote a price when we come out to look at your driveway. We can be reached either by phone (908) 996-7922 or Email custserv@pavexpaving.com.
